About the Artist
Growing up in a rural midwestern farming town, Cody was instilled at an early age with a solid work ethic and an affinity for nature and all its beauty.
A natural artist, Cody has been drawing and painting since he was five and is continually inspired by the desert which has been his home for most of his adult life.
“Each painting I do begins with an idea, something that’s inspired me. I try to distill this in my mind until I’ve achieved an almost meditative state where I can explore which compositions, color harmonies, etc., will best serve my idea. The balance I’m searching for lies in creating a work that is technically proficient while preseving that which fueled my passion in the first place. The result, hopefully, will provide the viewer with a perspective they might not have otherwise seen, a never-ending moment in time.”
A passionate student of art, Cody has studied at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the Scottsdale Artists School, where, in 2003, he was awarded a merit-based scholarship. In 2004, the Oil Painters of America selected him as that year’s Shirl Smithson Scholarship winner.
n 2005, Cody was nominated by the Internal Committee to participate in the Fifth Annual International Biennial of Contemporary Art, to be held in the historic Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Italy. Cody could not attend due to prior commitments but was honored to be nominated.
Also in 2005, Cody was invited to participate in the Seonda Art Center’s First Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival, an outdoor painting event in which only 35 landscape artists from across the country were invited to paint the Sedona area for one week, culminating with a gala opening at the Sedona Art Center. Cody has been invited back again for this year’s event.
Recently, Cody has been accepted into two new galleries and will be having three one-man shows this year. Cody has also been invited to Alaska by collectors to paint for a month in early summer.
Cody is a member of: The Oil Painters of America, Plein Air New Mexico, and The Society of Master Impressionists.
One of Cody’s paintings has been selected for inclusion in a “coffee-table” style book, titled The Jack Richeson Annual: The Plein Air New Mexico Year, due out in the fall.
