Mark Foltz is a mild mannered, middle aged guy born in
Akron
,
Ohio
. I graduated from
Kent
State
University
with a degree in photo-illustration in 1975. Between 1976 and 1992 I lived in
Los Angeles
, where I worked as a photographer and graphic designer. My wife and I moved back to
Ohio
in 1992. In July of 2003, we moved to
Lake Montezuma
,
AZ.
My sort-of-colorful past includes work as a soldier, carpenter, industrial spring maker, and over-the-road truck driver.
About the work:
Black & white photography has been my passion since i first started shooting (1971). By eliminating color, the image is removed one more step from ‘reality,’ allowing the viewer fewer attachments and expectations about what a scene ‘really’ looks like. By removing color from the equation, the moment is distilled and clarified. My subject matter is broad, but has a common thread: life. I’m fascinated by people and their leavings. I love doing portraits. I love to work with ruins and relics; those discarded things that once expressed someone’s intention and remain as only sketches of that intent. Nature is another favored subject, especially moving water.
About the process:
My images begin their lives on film. Early in college, I gravitated toward Kodak tri-x film and it has been my staple ever since. The inherent granularity of this film helps to remove the subject from ‘reality’, and makes the image more my own. The film originals are scanned, and printed digitally with archival materials. I feel that this process gives me more control over the final product than the darkroom ever did. Most of my images are "straight", with no digital manipulation other than tonal correction. The exceptions to this "straight" work will be obvious to the viewer. My digital prints are crafted to adhere to the same personal look and style I evolved in the darkroom.
Thanks so much for allowing me to share my vision with you!
